“Tonight?” I asked.
Emma grinned, and I could hear it over the phone. She always grinned like she knew a secret. “That’s the best time to go.”
I didn’t need more convincing. I would’ve followed her into a fire if she’d asked nicely. I’ve had many friends in my life. Too many, maybe. But none like her. None who made the air feel different just by walking through it. After only a few months, I would’ve traded every laugh, every shared secret, every late-night phone call with every other friend I’d ever had in my life—just for one minute with Emma.
